Prepositions are position words. They allow someone to know where something is. A preposition will come before the noun or the pronoun, but never before a verb. As you will see in the following sentences the preposition is followed by a noun.

aboard - Jack isĀ aboard a sailboat.

about - She didn't know about the accident.

above - The painting isĀ above the bed.

across - The office building isĀ across from my house.

after - The bell rang after the fire broke out.

against - The bat is leaningĀ against the wall.

along - Michael walked along the fence.

amid - We grew up amid great philosophers.

around - The general store isĀ around the corner.

at - We areĀ at the post office.

at - I amĀ at the post office.

at the back of - We like to sit at the back of the movie theater.

at the bottom of - The ball isĀ at the bottom of the driveway.

at the top of - The house isĀ at the top of the hill.

before - I try to get to work before the boss.

between - I like to sit between my parents.

behind - Chris isĀ behind the wall.

below - The submarine isĀ below the ocean water.

beneath - The toys are beneath the table.

beside - The shoes are besides the couch.

beyond - Andromeda galaxy is beyond our solar system.

by - The television isĀ by the computer.

despite - The man is intelligent despite his lack of knowledge.

down - The soap went down the drain.

during - The baseball game was cancelled during the storm.

except -

excluding - The adults were excluding the children.

following - A dog was following our car.

for - She was getting ready for the race.

from - We took apples from the tree.

in - The dog isĀ in his giant dog house.

inside - The ants liveĀ inside the ground.

in the middle of - I don't like to getĀ in the middle of arguments.

into - He drove his car into the wall.

like - I tried to fly like a bird.

near - I liveĀ near the amusement park.

next to - Jack is standingĀ next to the clown.

onto - The cat jumped onto the car roof.

on the corner of - There is a maple treeĀ on the corner of our street.

on - Stan isĀ on the roof.

on the side of - Steve isĀ on the side of his house.

on top of - The bikes areĀ on top of the car.

on the other side of - Andy isĀ on the other side of the park.

opposite - In England, the cars drive on theĀ opposite side of the road.

outside - We areĀ outside of our house. (We are outside playing in the rain.)

over - There is gold over the rainbow.

regarding - I had to call the phone company regarding the phone bill.

since - It has been very exciting since he won the lottery.

to the left of - Josephine isĀ to the left of her teacher.

to the right of - Sam isĀ to the right of his teacher.

through - The bunny went through the hole.

towards - The runner went towards the finish line.

under - The dog isĀ under the car.

underneath - The cat isĀ underneath the car with the dog.

until - I will wait until my father gets home.

up - The cat went up the tree.

upon - Cindy wished upon a star.

with - He went with her to the store.

within - The pizza will be cooked within ten minutes.

without - Jessica went to school without her raincoat.
