Question: When do you use "es" and está"?
Answer; They both mean "is", but when something has potential of changing, like traffic light color, you use "está". If something is permanent, and not going to change, use "es".
The "es" and "está" are verb forms from  the verb "ser" and "estar".
Read about "Ser and Estar" in Chapter Four Lesson 1.

What color is the flower? - ¿De qué color es la flor?
The flower is red. - La flor es roja.
