It suggests an unfinished action (having a headache) in the middle of a context where you are telling the actions happenned after and before it: "...I felt so tired so I went to bed. When I was in bed, I was not able to go to sleep because of it. Shortly after, I got up and then..." --> PRETÉRITO IMPERFECTO
