Formal - Use the "formal" when speaking to grandparents, bosses, teachers, or to people you don't know.

Familiar - Use the "familiar" when you know someone, or when speaking to children.
"¿Me puede traer? - Can you bring me?" is the formal way of asking.
"¿Me puedes traer?- Can you bring me?" is the familiar way of asking.
Question: What is the difference between the two questions.
Answer: "Puedes" comes from the "tú"(second person) form of the verb and
"puede" comes from the "usted" (third person) form of the verb.
If you are in a restaurant the polite way of asking a waiter or waitress
to bring you something is to say, "¿Me puede traer_______?".
¿Me puede traer la cuenta? - Can you bring me the check?
¿Me puede traer un vaso? - Can you bring me a glass?
¿Me puede traer un tenedor? - Can you bring me a fork?
¿Me puede traer un cuchillo? - Can you bring me a knife?

If you are speaking to a friend or someone you know the familiar way
to ask someone to bring you something is, "¿Me puedes traer_______?".
¿Me puedes traer la toalla? - Can you bring me the towel?
¿Me puedes traer un vaso? - Can you bring me a glass?
¿Me puedes traer un tenedor? - Can you bring me a fork?
¿Me puedes traer los zapatos? - Can you bring me the shoes?

 

NOTE: It is very important to say, "por favor" after asking the question.
For example: 
¿Me puede traer la cuenta, por favor?". -¿Can you please bring me the check?
¿Me puede traer un cuchillo por favor" - Can you please bring a knife?
¿Me puede traer pan por favor? - Can you please bring me bread?

Don't forget a "Gracías. - Thank you."

Question: Because "puede" is  used with "él", "ella" and "usted", does that mean,
"el and ella"are formal?
Answer: No, only "usted" that is formal. "Puede" is the verb form
of "poder" and "él, ella and usted share the verb form, "puede", but "usted" is formal and
"tú" is familiar, "él and ella" are just pronouns.
